Like ice, Rocco Mediate knocked in a four footer to win his first tournament in eight years the other day. At 47, he faced down the youngsters on his tail and won. He lost his lead but never gave up, and as the weather dried and warmed a bit, he found new life and there was the Rocco of 2008 standing up to Tiger Woods for 91 holes in the U.S. Open. Amazingly, he had an eagle everyday of this tournament, including a hole in one. In this end of season tournament, Rocco was Rocco: joking, smiling, kibitzing with the crowd and his fellow players, even as the pressure mounted, even as his PGA Tour livelihood was on the line until he could slip into the Champions Tour. Rocco may not have an Adonis body or a picture perfect swing. Rocco may look like the guy at the deli selling pastrami behind the counter. But Rocco Mediate is a real human being. Roc is good for golf. And we can all learn from him.

One of my golf buddies often laughs when he mishits a shot. It’s a strange,almost macabre laugh, perhaps that of a deranged man being led to the gas chamber. Golf can bring that out. It is definitely not a laugh of joy, or delight, or whimsy. There are a lot of tears in that laugh, and the louder he takes it, the more anguish is beneath it. It’s a laugh that makes me feel uncomfortable, for no one else around us is laughing with him. We all have our heads down and no one is looking at him. We’ve all been there…except for the laughing bit. Hunter Mahan laughed some too when he flubbed that chip in the Ryder Cup. What else could he do? The crying would come later. What I like about the Ryder Cup is that I see no endorsements on the clothing or bags of the players. There are no walking billboards out there. To tell the truth, I don’t give a damn who wins. Sure, I favor the U.S., but Tiger Woods has lost me as Bill Clinton did, Phil and Bubba are train wrecks in waiting, Stuart Cink robbed Tom Watson of The Open, Zack Johnson thinks Jesus gives a damn about his golf game, and Cory Pavin could stand to smile and shout a lot more. I like Ricky Fowler but he’s turning into an underachiever. As for the Euros, I’d like to see them lose, but I very much like (more…)
