Did anyone see Jason Day hit a totally fat tee shot a couple weeks ago in Hawaii that went about 50 yards, then screw up his approach, then reach the green about 25 feet from the cup, and drop the putt for a par? Putting can salvage a lousy hole like a grand slam homer when your team’s down 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth. Three flubs and a bomb can get the golf gods dancing around your head, breathing new life into a ho hum round, like Robert Garrigus dropping a 50 foot eagle putt for a share of the lead after a poor third round in Hawaii. That’s the point of never letting golf get you down: A great putt may just be over the horizon. Remember that, Ray Romano (the Master of Negative Thinking): One great putt can help you break 80.
